Eastville Park Lido was built as a scheme to relieve unemployment, and opened in 1907. It was at first obligatory for bathers to were full costumes when using the pool, but after 1920 bathers were permitted to wear swimming trunks.
The pool fell out of use during WWI and became derelict. It was also hit by a bomb during WWII, according to the Eastville Park Friends website. In 2018 the site was transformed into a theatre for a performance of Romeo and Juliet.
In June 2023, a petition started to build a new pool in Eastville Park and shortly after someone started a petition to ban the building of a new pool! Some people have too much time on their hands.
The community group campaigning for a new pool has identified that the historic Lido is not the best location for a new Lido. They say that it is used for other purposes, is too small and too far from services.
