Pickie Pool in Bangor was built as a formal bathing pool with supporting concrete buildings in the 1930’s. A definitive date is not easily found but it appears that the building developed between 1931 and finished in 1937. The 1930’s pool was square, at 100’ x 100’ and between 2’ 6” and 7’ 6” deep.
Prior to this it was a less formal bathing area, carved out of rock and it is shown on an old map as being a rectangular “swimming pond” on Pickie Rock. The map on this page dates to around 1915.
The pool was located on the waterfront within Belfast Lough.
There was a 10m (35ft.) diving platform with numerous intermediate fixed boards and was the venue for international diving competitions because of its height.
The pool was closed in the late 1980s and demolished to be replaced with a modern water park.
