Swimming here started as a location for bathing in a man-made lake formed in the 15th Century by damming a stream. The pool was built in 1887 with high timber walls to shield swimmers from view. It was extended in 1900. It was extensively reconstructed in the 1930’s to provide an Art Deco building with changing facilities. Additional changing facilites were built in the 1960’s.
