A pool with a long history on an historic site, it finally closed and was demolished in 2021 after a long battle by a local campaign group. The first swimming pool in Abbey Fields was opened in the summer of 1896. It was rebuilt in the 1930s and extended in the 1960s and 1980s.
The pool will be replaced with two new indoor pools but the cost has increased dramatically after finding medieval remains on the site. The council has approved an increase from £14.7m to £22m for the scheme which will see the pools built on top of the medieval buildings.
