


On the North East coast lies the decaying remains of Tynemouth Outdoor Swimming Pool. Filled with rocks in an attempt to provide an artificial rock pool and attract marine life failed and has been a long-standing campaign for restoration that might just be getting some traction in 2024. Lets hope so!

Notes | 1925 – The concrete salt water tidal pool opened at the southern end of Longsands Beech. 1990 – The pool starts to fall into disrepair. 1995 – The Local Authority demolish the ancillary buildings and bulldozed the rubble into the pool, at a cost of £200,000, before filling with concrete and imported boulders to form an artificial ‘rock pool’. 2012 – The Friends form as a community group in response to new plans announced by North Tyneside Council to fully concrete over the existing pool site. 2013 – The Friends group submit their proposals supported by industry professionals and were then invited to work exclusively with the council to develop the plans. 2023 – The local council vote 8-1 in favour of granting planning permission to the group. |
