A public fundraising campaign was launched in 1957 to make a long-held wish to have a pool in the area a reality. The target was £9,500. A gift of land in Cross Lane was made by Leslie Smith.
In 1962, to allow for more ambitious plans, a plot of land. part of the bowling green next door was acquired. Work started in 1963. Additional specifications included water heating system. A grant from the Ministry of Education meant that the total cost of £28,000 was near to being met.
The outdoor pools and buildings opened on 30 May 1964. The indoor pools were opened in 1993.

Plans for an open air swimming pool which it is planned to build at Faversham, Kent, have been revised. The pool is to be larger than was at first proposed so that it will comply with Amateur Swimming Association standards. The revised plan provides for a pool 110ft. by 42ft., with a depth from 3ft. to 11ft. 6 in. When a fund for the pool was started three years ago it was estimated that the cost would be about £12,000—now this figure has risen to £18,000.
